Rhythms that Transcend Boundaries: Hadi Alizadeh Invites You to Erlangen
In the Historical Hall of the vhs Erlangen, rhythm becomes a shared experience. At the workshop Percussion: Rhythms of the Soul on October 17, 2026, Iranian percussionist Hadi Alizadeh introduces the fascinating sound world of Daf and Tonbak. The course will be conducted in German and Persian and is aimed at all who wish to not just hear rhythm but discover it with their own hands.
Persian Drums, Immediate Sound
Hadi Alizadeh grew up in Iran and received training on the Persian drum Tonbak from the renowned master Bahman Rajabi in Tehran. Since 2001, the musician has been living in Germany. His artistic work combines traditional Persian rhythm with contemporary musical expressiveness.
The workshop focuses on fundamental playing techniques and rhythms. Participants will experience how individual beats create a pulsating structure: precise in synchronization, open to improvisation, and sustained by a special live atmosphere. The instruments will be provided by the course leader.
From the First Beat to Collective Improvisation
The course conveys the fundamentals in an understandable and accessible way. Already after a short time, initial success experiences in collaboration will emerge. It is not about virtuosic prior knowledge but rather about attention, physical awareness, and the joy of shared musical dialogue.
Alizadeh's teaching combines technical expertise with a sensual approach to rhythm. Tonbak and Daf open sound colors between dry hits, deep pulse, and bouncing frame drum. East and West, heaven and earth meet in a musical language that has an immediate impact.
A Musician Between Tradition and Present
Hadi Alizadeh founded the ensemble Alamto in 2011 and was awarded best instrumentalist at the international music competition Val Tidone in Italy. In 2017, he won first prize at the Creole Festival Bayern together with Gayané Sureni. Besides concerts and international workshops, he publishes teaching books on Daf, Tonbak, and uneven rhythms and has been teaching at the City Music School in Nuremberg since 2019.
His work represents a vibrant connection of musical tradition, pedagogical clarity, and modern stage performance. In this workshop, the baton is not conducted by a stick, but by the collective pulse of the group.
Conclusion: Experience Rhythm Yourself
This workshop offers an intense concert experience without a concert stage: Here, music is tried out, shared, and created immediately. Those who want to get to know Persian percussion, discover new sound worlds, or sharpen their own rhythmic perception will find an inspiring approach at the Historical Hall of the vhs Erlangen. Participation costs 27.20 euros; the instruments are available on-site.
