Home Economics as Cultural History: 100 Years of Mastery Rights in Erlangen

The exhibition 100 Years of Mastery Rights in Home Economics: We Master the Future makes a significant chapter in occupational and women's history visible. On the occasion of the anniversary, the DHB – Network Household e. V. invites you to the City Library of Erlangen. The vernissage opens on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at 7 PM in the courtyard of Palais Stutterheim.

A Historical Step for Vocational Education

In 1925, the first female masters of home economics were certified. This opened an independent path for women in vocational education in trades and professions. This followed the entry of the profession of home economist into the craftsman's registry in 1915. The exhibition commemorates this important milestone and places it in the history of women's paid work and social participation.

Competence, Organization, and Social Responsibility

Home economics is not presented here as a private sideline, but as a professional field of knowledge and action. The exhibition showcases the diverse areas of performance and competencies that shape the profession to this day: planning, provision, organization, sustainability, and responsibility for communal living. In the analysis of the work, a nuanced picture emerges of an activity that shapes everyday life and sustains social structures.

Exhibition Atmosphere and Cultural Education

The City Library of Erlangen creates an open framework for this historical and socio-political theme. Between information, cultural memory, and cultural education, the exhibition connects factual mediation with personal history. Visitors experience an artistic experience in an extended sense: The aesthetic experience arises from the connection of visual presentation, historical contexts, and the question of what value professional home economics has for families and society.

Curators' Tours During the Exhibition Period

Weekly curator tours are planned throughout the exhibition period. They deepen the historical backgrounds, explain the development of mastery rights, and open the view to present challenges of home economics. Thus, the exhibition becomes a place of exchange on occupational identity, recognition, qualifications, and future perspectives.

Conclusion: A Forgotten Chapter Becomes Visible

The exhibition connects occupational, women's, and social history into an impressive invitation to all who are interested in social change, cultural education, and the significance of home economics. Anyone wanting to trace the development of professional home economics and re-evaluate its importance for the present should experience this special anniversary live at the City Library of Erlangen.
