Cyrill Lachauer. The Sunset Route: When landscape becomes narrative
At the Kunstpalais Erlangen, The Sunset Route opens up an art experience that condenses photography, film, and installation presentation into a multifaceted narrative. Cyrill Lachauer leads into a world of images where landscape is not just a backdrop but appears as a speaking space charged with history, movement, loss, and resistance. The exhibition runs from 20.06.2026 to 27.09.2026 at Palais Stutterheim, Marktplatz 1 in Erlangen. Narrative Landscapes between the USA, Mexico, and Bosnia
Lachauer, born in 1979 in the Inntal region, works with photographic series, films, and texts to create an aesthetic experience that appears outwardly calm and is inwardly highly charged. The works on display were created between 2020 and 2026 and revolve around themes of freedom, self-determination, colonization, exclusion, and exploitation. Central to his idea is that of narrative landscapes: places where people, cultures, objects, atmospheres, and historical inscriptions are inextricably linked. Film, Photography, and Montage as Open Form
At the center is the film project Slack, which Lachauer developed together with US photographer Mike Brodie. It is complemented by the new short films The Prologue and The Epilogue, which form a loose trilogy that further contemplates the motif of the railway as an image of mobility, migration, and social reality. Additionally, there are photographic works such as Cardboard & Copenhagen and Birds (Nat. Geo. 1989–1999), where documentary observation, collage, and poetic condensation intersect. At the Kunstpalais, the works are installed in a new arrangement and are interwoven in a site-specific manner. Curatorial Precision and Strong Contemporary Questions
Curated by Susanne Touw and Malte Lin-Kröger, the exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Goetz Collection and is supported by several partners. The Kunstpalais sees itself as a house for international contemporary art that makes innovative, socially relevant positions visible and accompanies them with educational offerings. Thus, The Sunset Route also receives a clear museum pedagogical dimension: art as a space for reflection, not as a finished answer.
