Rediscovering Adolf Schinnerer: Impressionism, Graphics, and Franconian Landscape

In honor of the 150th birthday, the City Museum Erlangen is dedicating a comprehensive special exhibition to the painter, graphic artist, illustrator, and art writer Adolf Schinnerer. From October 25, 2026, to February 14, 2027, NEWLY SEEN – Adolf Schinnerer opens a new perspective on an artist who was among the most important creatives of the Erlangen region at the beginning of the 20th century.

An Artist Between Painting and Printmaking

Adolf Schinnerer was born in 1876 in Schwarzenbach an der Saale and grew up in Erlangen and Neustadt an der Aisch. After studying in Munich and at the Karlsruhe Academy of Arts, he developed a versatile body of work spanning painting, drawing, illustration, and etching. From 1903 onwards, he focused intensely on printmaking; later, as a professor and academy director, he shaped the education of several generations of artists in Munich.

The exhibition places Schinnerer's work in an art-historical context within Impressionism. Together with Georg Greve-Lindau, the first part of the anniversary exhibition series, he is connected not only by studying at the Karlsruhe Academy of Arts but also by working in Tennenlohe and receiving the prestigious Villa Romana Prize.

Franconian Motifs, Vivid Colors, and Atmospheric Light

The focus is on views from Franconia and Tennenlohe. Schinnerer found his motifs in the rural surroundings of Erlangen and later in the landscape near Munich. His paintings impress with concentrated color, clear forms, and an immediate perception of light and atmosphere. The landscape does not appear merely as a backdrop but as an independent experiential space.

The representative selection includes more than one hundred paintings and graphics. Many works come from private family collections and are on display in Erlangen for the first time. Several new acquisitions of the City Museum complement the loans and make the exhibition a unique opportunity for viewing the artwork.

The Drypoint as a Means of Expression

Schinnerer achieved particular mastery in drypoint etching. With sharply defined lines and a distinctive, sometimes rough surface effect, he created expressive landscape and portrait representations. His etching cycles showcase a unique imagination that encompasses not only poetic moments but also dark and disturbing imagery.

Thus, the exhibition broadens the view of Schinnerer beyond the impressionistic landscape painter. Drawing and printmaking appear as independent fields of an artistic language, where observation, narration, and psychological tension intertwine.

Art Experience and Cultural Education

The City Museum Erlangen connects the exhibition with a diverse accompanying program. Public tours, family tours, creative offerings, holiday workshops, and a practical workshop on experimental landscapes open up different access points to Schinnerer's art. A tour with a creative impulse and bookable offerings for groups and school classes deepen cultural education.

Inclusive formats are also planned: Tours can be accompanied by sign language interpreters upon request, and a mobile FM system is available for visitors with hearing impairments. This creates an exhibition atmosphere where aesthetic experience, art-historical expertise, and personal experimentation come together.

Conclusion: A Historical Reencounter with Surprising Relevance

NEWLY SEEN – Adolf Schinnerer makes visible the multifaceted nature of an artist working between Impressionism, landscape painting, and original graphics. The exhibition promises a sensory art experience with vibrant colors, striking lines, and a fascinating connection between regional memory and overarching art history. Those wishing to experience the aesthetic experience of painting and printmaking directly should not miss this rediscovery at the City Museum Erlangen.
