NEWLY SEEN – Adolf Schinnerer: Landscape, Line, and Imagination

On the occasion of the 150th birthday, the City Museum Erlangen is dedicating a comprehensive special exhibition to the Franconian painter, graphic artist, illustrator, and art writer Adolf Schinnerer. From October 25, 2026, to February 14, 2027, the exhibition offers a new perspective on an important artist of the Erlangen region.

A versatile body of work between painting and graphics

Adolf Schinnerer was born in 1876 in Schwarzenbach an der Saale and grew up in Erlangen and Neustadt an der Aisch. After studying art history in Munich and at the Karlsruhe Art Academy, he developed an independent oeuvre between painting, drawing, etching, illustration, and art writing. His works combine precise observations of nature with a poetic, atmospherically condensed visual language.

Franconian landscape as an artistic experience

A particular focus is on Schinnerer's years in Tennenlohe, where he lived and worked from 1904 to 1910. Landscapes from Franconia and views from Tennenlohe show how the artist transformed familiar places into colorful moods, rhythmic lines, and quiet moments of perception. The exhibition makes regional art history an immediate aesthetic experience.

Over a hundred works for the first time in Erlangen

A representative selection from Schinnerer's extensive oeuvre can be seen. More than a hundred paintings and graphics, mostly from private family collections, are presented for the first time in Erlangen. The examination of the works ranges from impressionistically influenced landscape images to expressive graphic compositions, in which literature, the Bible, myth, and the experiences of the 20th century resonate.

Art historical classification and Villa-Romana Prize

Schinnerer is regarded as a representative of an independent Impressionism, without permanently aligning himself with a single art movement. Together with Georg Greve-Lindau, the first part of the anniversary exhibition, he shares the study at the Karlsruhe Art Academy, the familial relationship through the marriage of two sisters, and the award of the renowned Villa-Romana Prize. His works are housed in public collections in Munich, the Städel Museum Frankfurt, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, among others.

Exhibition atmosphere and cultural education

The presentation invites visitors to discover Schinnerer's painting and print graphics with open eyes and heightened perception. Colors, lines, paper, and image spaces create a concentrated exhibition atmosphere where observation of nature and imagination converge. Public tours, family tours, creative offerings, and workshops complement the exhibition and connect art historical expertise with cultural education.

Conclusion: An artistic experience for new perspectives

NEWLY SEEN – Adolf Schinnerer offers art enthusiasts the rare opportunity to rediscover a versatile body of work between landscape painting, graphics, and literary imagination. The exhibition makes regional art history visible and opens up an intense aesthetic experience in the City Museum Erlangen. A visit is particularly worthwhile for those who want to experience painting, print graphics, and the poetic power of familiar landscapes directly.
