Adolf Schinnerer redefined: A fascinating art experience at the Erlangen City Museum
On the occasion of the 150th birthday of Adolf Schinnerer, the Erlangen City Museum dedicates the exhibition NEWLY SEEN to the Franconian painter, graphic artist, illustrator, and art writer. From October 25, 2026, to February 14, 2027, the exhibition opens a new perspective on a versatile oeuvre between painting, printmaking, illustration, and art writing.
Landscapes, light, and bold colors
Central to the exhibition are more than a hundred paintings and graphic works, most of which are being shown in Erlangen for the first time. Schinnerer found his motifs in the Franconian landscape, in Tennenlohe, and in the rural surroundings of Erlangen. His frequently developed paintings, using just a few bold colors, combine impressionistic perception with a distinct, unmistakable visual language.
The expressiveness of etching
A special quality in the consideration of his works lies in Schinnerer's graphic creations. With the drypoint technique, he created expressive landscapes and character representations. His etching cycles unfold an intense, sometimes dark and disturbing imagination, drawing on literary, biblical, mythological, and contemporary historical impulses. Lines, areas, and traces of material become carriers of a compelling aesthetic experience.
Art historical classification and regional significance
Adolf Schinnerer studied in Munich and at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts. He shares a connection with Georg Greve-Lindau, the first part of the anniversary exhibition series 2026, through their education in Karlsruhe, their family ties due to the marriage of two sisters, and their award with the renowned Villa-Romana Prize. Both artists are considered representatives of Impressionism and worked at times in Tennenlohe.
Later, Schinnerer developed into a versatile artist and significant art educator. He worked as a freelance painter and graphic artist, became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, and led a drawing and etching class there. His works are now located in public collections in Munich, at the Städel Museum Frankfurt, and in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Education and cultural learning
The accompanying program expands the exhibition with public tours, family tours, creative offerings, and workshops. An experience bag invites visitors to discover the art with various approaches attentively and playfully. In this way, the City Museum combines art historical expertise with museum educational mediation and creates space for personal artwork consideration.
Conclusion: An artist between nature observation and graphic imagination
NEWLY SEEN – Adolf Schinnerer promises an intense exhibition atmosphere with colorful landscapes, striking character depictions, and the special tension of original printmaking. The exhibition makes visible how uniquely Schinnerer's art emerged between Impressionism, personal nature perception, and expressive line art. Art enthusiasts should definitely experience this versatile art experience live at the Erlangen City Museum.
