NEWLY SEEN: Adolf Schinnerer's Landscapes, Lines and Inner Images

The Stadtmuseum Erlangen dedicates a comprehensive special exhibition to the 150th birthday of the Franconian painter, graphic artist, illustrator, and art writer Adolf Schinnerer. From October 25, 2026 to February 14, 2027, the exhibition offers a new perspective on an artist who decisively shaped the art landscape of the Erlangen region at the beginning of the 20th century.

A reunion with a versatile artist

Adolf Schinnerer was born in 1876 in Schwarzenbach an der Saale and grew up in Erlangen and Neustadt an der Aisch. After studying in Munich and at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts, he developed an independent body of work bridging painting, drawing, etching, illustration, and art writing. From 1904 to 1910, he lived and worked in Tennenlohe, where he found numerous motifs for his artistic engagement with the Franconian landscape.

Over a hundred works on display for the first time in Erlangen

The exhibition presents a representative selection from Schinnerer's rich oeuvre. Works include paintings and graphics, featuring views from Franconia and Tennenlohe. Many of the over a hundred pieces come from private family collections and are shown for the first time in Erlangen. This is complemented by new acquisitions from the Stadtmuseum as well as selected loans.

In observing his works, vibrant colors, clear shapes, and a concentrated observation of nature come together. Schinnerer's landscape images transform familiar places into atmospherically dense pictorial spaces. The aesthetic experience arises from the tension between precise nature perception and personal expressive power.

Impressionism with a unique visual language

Schinnerer is considered a representative of Impressionism, yet he developed an unmistakable artistic style. He found his motifs in the rural surroundings of Erlangen and later in Ottershausen near Munich. Nature appears in his works not merely as a topographical representation but as a changeable resonance space for light, color, and mood.

His graphic work is particularly impressive. As an etcher and draftsman, Schinnerer achieved an intense expressive power that is evident in line work, contrast, and compositional density. Literary texts, biblical themes, mythological subjects, and the experiences of his time flowed into his illustrations and graphic cycles.

Art history, Academy and Villa-Romana Prize

Schinnerer's art historical significance extends beyond regional art history. In 1909, he received the prestigious Villa-Romana Prize, which included a stay in Florence. Later, he served as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and took over its presidency in 1946. Thus, the exhibition connects the sensory exhibition atmosphere of the images with an art historical context of Schinnerer's career.

The exhibition is also related to the exhibition about Georg Greve-Lindau. Both artists were study colleagues at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts, related by the marriage of two sisters, worked in Tennenlohe for a time, and were awarded the Villa-Romana Prize. The curation makes visible a network that allows for a new reading of the region's art history.

Conclusion: An art experience between landscape and line

NEWLY SEEN – Adolf Schinnerer connects regional memory, art historical research, and immediate aesthetic experience. Visitors will discover paintings, etchings, and illustrations that translate nature observation into color, rhythm, and line. A visit to the Stadtmuseum Erlangen is particularly worthwhile for anyone wishing to experience Impressionist painting, graphics, and cultural education in a concentrated exhibition.
