NEWLY SEEN – Adolf Schinnerer: Landscape, Line and Imagination

On the occasion of the 150th birthday, the Erlangen City Museum dedicates a comprehensive special exhibition to the Franconian painter, graphic artist, illustrator, and art writer Adolf Schinnerer. From October 25, 2026, to February 14, 2027, the presentation offers a new perspective on a significant artistic figure from the Erlangen region.

A Versatile Body of Work between Painting and Graphics

Adolf Schinnerer, born in 1876 in Schwarzenbach an der Saale and raised in Erlangen and Neustadt an der Aisch, developed an independent oeuvre that spans painting, drawing, etching, illustration, and art writing. His works combine precise nature observation with a poetically condensed visual language.

Franconian Landscape as An Aesthetic Experience

A focus of the exhibition is on Schinnerer’s years in Tennenlohe, where he lived and worked from 1904 to 1910. Views from Franconia and Tennenlohe show how the artist transformed familiar places into colorful moods, rhythmic lines, and quiet moments of perception. Vivid colors, reduced forms, and atmospheric picture spaces shape the exhibition atmosphere.

Discover Over a Hundred Works

The exhibition presents a representative selection from Schinnerer’s extensive body of work. More than a hundred paintings and graphics, mostly from private family collections, can be seen for the first time in Erlangen. The exploration of the works leads from impressionistically shaped landscapes to expressive etchings and graphic compositions, where literature, the Bible, myth, and experiences of the 20th century resonate.

Art Historical Classification

Schinnerer is regarded as a representative of an independent Impressionism, without permanently aligning himself with a single art movement. Together with Georg Greve-Lindau, who is part of the anniversary exhibition, he shares the experience of studying at the Karlsruhe Academy of Arts, the familial relationship through the marriage of two sisters, and the award of the prestigious Villa-Romana Prize. Both artists spent several years in Tennenlohe at the beginning of the 20th century.

Cultural Education for Different Generations

The exhibition combines art historical expertise with cultural education. For children from six years and art enthusiasts, an experience bag with playful impulses is available. Tasks related to colors, shapes, scents, and perspectives invite exploration of the works with all senses and deepen the aesthetic experience.

Conclusion: An Artistic Experience between Nature Observation and Imagination

NEWLY SEEN – Adolf Schinnerer makes regional art history directly tangible and opens new perspectives on painting, printmaking, and landscape art. Visitors can expect a concentrated exploration of works featuring rarely shown pieces, poetic visual worlds, and an art historically informative rediscovery. Those who wish to experience Franconian modernity and the quiet power of familiar landscapes live should not miss this exhibition at the Erlangen City Museum.
