NEWLY SEEN – Adolf Schinnerer: Landscape, Line and Imagination
On the occasion of the 150th birthday of the Franconian artist Adolf Schinnerer, the Erlangen City Museum dedicates a comprehensive special exhibition to his versatile work. From October 25, 2026, to February 14, 2027, the exhibition offers a new perspective on a painter, graphic artist, illustrator, and art writer who significantly shaped the art scene of the region around 1900.
An Artist Between Painting and Graphics
Adolf Schinnerer was born in 1876 in Schwarzenbach an der Saale and grew up in Erlangen and Neustadt an der Aisch. After studying art history and training at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts, he developed an independent oeuvre between painting, drawing, etching, illustration, and art writing. As an etcher and teacher, he gained recognition beyond Franconia; later, he served as a professor and headed the school for graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.
The Landscape as a Poetic Space of Experience
The exhibition focuses on landscapes from Franconia and Tennenlohe as well as other motifs from Schinnerer's artistic environment. His paintings condense nature observation into a concentrated aesthetic experience. Few strong colors, clear shapes, and a dynamic spatial effect lend the images a quiet intensity. Light and landscape appear not merely as reflections, but as carriers of mood, memory, and inner movement.
Over One Hundred Works for the First Time in Erlangen
The presentation brings together more than one hundred paintings and graphics. Numerous works come from private family collections and are being shown in Erlangen for the first time. The selection is complemented by new additions from the City Museum and further loans. This creates a multifaceted insight into Schinnerer's artistic development and into the diverse media of his work observation.
Art Historical Classification and New Perspectives
Schinnerer is regarded as a representative of an independent Impressionism, but he could not be permanently classified into a single art movement. Besides painting, print graphics formed a significant focus of his work. His etchings combine precise line work with atmospheric density. The renowned Villa-Romana Prize, his teaching activities in Munich, and his significance for regional art history underline his position within German modern art.
Cultural Education at the City Museum
The exhibition invites visitors to view familiar image motifs from unusual perspectives. For children aged six and older and art-loving adults, a playful sensory experience bag with perceptual impulses is available at the museum ticket office. Tasks related to colors, shapes, smells, and facial expressions expand the observation of the works and make the museum visit an intergenerational art experience.
Conclusion: Discover Schinnerer Live
NEWLY SEEN – Adolf Schinnerer connects regional art history with a lively aesthetic experience. The exhibition makes visible how closely landscape, memory, line, and color interact in Schinnerer's work. Anyone wishing to experience painting, graphics, and cultural education in a concentrated museum atmosphere should definitely visit this special exhibition at the Erlangen City Museum.
