NEWLY SEEN – Adolf Schinnerer: Landscape, Line and Imagination

On the occasion of the 150th birthday, the Erlangen City Museum dedicates a comprehensive special exhibition to the Franconian painter, graphic artist, illustrator, and art writer Adolf Schinnerer. From October 25, 2026, to February 14, 2027, the exhibition opens a new perspective on a versatile artist who has significantly shaped the art history of the Erlangen region.

An Artist Between Painting and Graphics

Adolf Schinnerer was born in 1876 in Schwarzenbach an der Saale and grew up in Erlangen and Neustadt an der Aisch. After studying in Munich and at the Karlsruhe Academy of Arts, he developed an independent oeuvre that spans painting, drawing, engraving, illustration, and art writing. From 1903 onward, he devoted himself intensively to printmaking; later, he taught at the Munich School of Applied Arts and at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, where he became president in 1946.

Franconian Landscapes Revisited

At the center of the exhibition are views from Franconia and Tennenlohe, where Schinnerer lived and worked from 1904 to 1910. He found his motifs in nature, in rural paths, gardens, and local views. The landscape is not presented as a mere topographical study but as an atmospheric experiential space. Colors, lines, and areas coalesce into a quiet, poetic visual language.

A representative selection of more than a hundred paintings and graphic works makes the range of his creation visible. Many works come from private family ownership and are shown in Erlangen for the first time. This gives the exhibition the character of an artistic rediscovery.

Impressionism with a Unique Handwriting

Schinnerer’s paintings are considered influenced by Impressionism. At the same time, he developed a distinctive style that cannot be wholly assigned to a single art movement. He often worked with a few strong colors and concentrated the visual effect on clear forms, rhythmic lines, and a sensitive observation of light.

This individuality is particularly impressive in his etchings and drawings. The graphics combine technical precision with intense expressiveness. Literary, biblical, fairy-tale, and mythological themes extend the view beyond the visible landscape, lending the work a contemplative, at times symbolic dimension.

Artwork Observation as an Aesthetic Experience

The exhibition invites a decelerated observation of the works. Tensions arise between color areas and lines, immediate nature observation and inner imagination. The exhibition atmosphere opens up an art experience that connects historical context with sensual perception.

Families and young visitors can also discover Schinnerer’s art in a playful way. The city museum offers an activity bag for children from six years old and art-enthusiastic adults. Various impulses encourage visitors to view images from unusual perspectives, engage poetically with motifs, and reconnect color, form, and perception.

Cultural Education and Regional Art History

NEWLY SEEN places Schinnerer in a larger art historical context. Together with Georg Greve-Lindau, whose anniversary exhibition in 2026 marked the beginning, he shares a background from the Karlsruhe Academy of Arts, time in Tennenlohe, and the award of the renowned Villa-Romana Prize. The city museum thus illustrates how closely regional landscape, artistic networks, and supraregional art development are interconnected.

Conclusion: An Exhibition for Curious Eyes

NEWLY SEEN – Adolf Schinnerer promises a concentrated encounter with painting, graphics, and Franconian landscape art. The exhibition combines historical research, art scientific expertise, and immediate aesthetic experience. Anyone wishing to rediscover the quiet power of landscape images, the expressive possibilities of etching, and the cultural history of Erlangen should experience this art event live at the Erlangen City Museum.
