NEWLY SEEN: Adolf Schinnerer at the City Museum of Erlangen
On the occasion of the 150th birthday of the Franconian artist Adolf Schinnerer, the City Museum of Erlangen dedicates a comprehensive special exhibition to his versatile work. The presentation invites you to rediscover a significant painter, graphic artist, illustrator, and art writer of the early 20th century.
Landscape between Observation and Imagination
At the center are Schinnerer's years in Tennenlohe from 1904 to 1910. He found his motifs in the Franconian nature and the rural surroundings of Erlangen. For him, landscape does not appear as a mere representation but as an atmospherically condensed experiential space. Few strong colors, clear forms, and a sensitive play of light connect nature observation with poetic independence.
Painting, Graphics, and the Power of Line
The exhibition presents a representative selection from Schinnerer's rich oeuvre. Alongside paintings, drawings and expressive etchings are showcased. His use of the drypoint technique holds particular significance, with which he created landscapes and depictions of figures of great graphic intensity. His cycles of etchings simultaneously reveal a distinctive fantasy that includes dark, enigmatic, and disturbing visual worlds.
An Artist in an Art Historical Context
Adolf Schinnerer is considered a representative of Impressionism but developed an unmistakable visual language beyond a narrow stylistic classification. He studied at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts and, together with his fellow student Georg Greve-Lindau, received the prestigious Villa-Romana Prize. The exhibition forms the second part of an anniversary presentation that began in 2026 with Greve-Lindau.
Over One Hundred Works Debuting in Erlangen
More than one hundred paintings and graphic works are on display, including numerous loans from private family collections as well as new acquisitions by the City Museum. Many works will be shown in Erlangen for the first time. This curation opens new perspectives on Schinnerer's artistic development and on the cultural significance of the Tennenlohe years.
Cultural Education for Different Generations
In conjunction with the exhibition, the City Museum offers public tours, family tours, creative activities, and workshops. An experience bag with sensory and playful impulses supports children from six years old as well as art-interested adults in viewing the works. Tours for groups and school classes can be booked. A mobile FM system is available for visitors with hearing impairments; assistance from sign language interpreters is possible upon registration.
Exhibition Atmosphere and Artistic Experience
The encounter with Schinnerer's painting and graphics combines aesthetic experience with art historical insight. Between luminous landscapes, concentrated lines, and mysterious imagination, a multifaceted artistic experience arises that allows familiar Franconian spaces to appear in a new light.
The exhibition welcomes visitors with a precisely curated selection, rarely shown works, and diverse approaches to art. Those who wish to experience Adolf Schinnerer's relationship with landscape, line, and imagination firsthand should attend this exhibition at the City Museum of Erlangen live.
