From Several Threads: Textile Art as a Collective Memory Image
In the open textile art workshop From Several Threads at the community center Die Villa in Erlangen, fabrics, threads, drawings, and personal memories come together in a participatory art project. Together with the artist Karina Liutaia, participants explore textile materials as carriers of biography, work history, and cultural memory.
When Fabrics Preserve Stories
Old garments, fabric remnants, and shared experiences take on a new aesthetic form through patchwork, embroidery, and textile collage. Every seam, every surface, and every thread refers to origin, work, and personal history. The examination of the works leads directly into the creative process and makes visible how individual fragments create a common image.
Textile Art Between Craft and Contemporary Art
Karina Liutaia works at the intersection of textile art, theater, fashion design, and participatory art. After studying fashion design in St. Petersburg and earning a Master of Arts at the University of Arts Bremen, she developed projects where knitting, embroidery, and sewing intersect with artistic research, conversations, and collective work processes. For her engagement with regional textile and labor history, she received the art scholarship from the city and district of Bamberg in 2023.
Work Environments and Textile Memories
The project focuses on life and work stories from the textile industry. Experiences from production, administration, design, sales, logistics, and fashion meet in interviews, sketches, and textile fragments. From this, textile images and portraits emerge that connect sustainability, memory culture, and contemporary art.
An Art Experience to Participate In
The atmosphere of the exhibition grows from the shared activity. Colors, textile structures, thread patterns, and the tactile quality of the materials open up a sensual aesthetic experience. The workshop does not understand art as a distant presentation but as a lively process of cultural education. Visitors experience how craft techniques, social memory, and participatory installation interweave.
Conclusion: Creating Art Together
From Several Threads offers an accessible art experience for everyone who wants to connect textile art, local history, and communal creativity. The open workshop makes visible how cultural testimonies arise from personal memories and how a common image is created from individual threads. Admission is free. Experience the aesthetic experience and the special exhibition atmosphere live in Erlangen on November 2, 2026.
