A Collection in Motion: Discover Art History at the Art Museum Erlangen
The exhibition In Motion – The Collection of the Art Museum invites visitors to learn about the origin, development, and future of the collection at the Art Museum Erlangen. Selected highlights of the museum illustrate how civic engagement, museological work, and regional art history are interconnected.
Collection as a Living Memory
The focus is on the history of the collection activities, which emerged in 1989 from the engagement of the Friends of the Art Museum Erlangen. The presentation looks not only at individual works but also at the cultural processes behind the establishment of a museum collection. This way, art history becomes an experiential open and ongoing dialogue.
Regional Art and Curatorial Perspectives
The Art Museum Erlangen is particularly dedicated to art after 1945 as well as positions from Franconia, the Upper Palatinate, and the Nuremberg metropolitan region. The selected works open up a concentrated view of the art and show how painting, graphic arts, and other artistic expressions are placed within an art-historical and societal context.
Aesthetic Experience in the Loewenich Palace
On the first floor of the baroque Loewenich Palace, a special exhibition atmosphere is created: Historical architecture meets modern art in a space full of tension. Light, spatial effects, colors, and shapes direct perception toward the features of the works and make the museum visit an intense art experience.
A Glimpse into the Future of the Museum
The exhibition does not regard the collection as a finished archive. It questions how an art museum further develops its holdings, keeps regional art visible, and enables cultural education. Thus, the curation connects retrospective and future perspectives and encourages personal engagement with the collecting, preserving, and conveying of art.
The Art Museum Erlangen offers additional opportunities for deeper engagement with guided tours and group offers. Admission is free; donations for the Friends of the Art Museum Erlangen are welcome.
Conclusion: Experience Art History Live
In Motion – The Collection of the Art Museum opens a multifaceted view of the past and future of a regionally anchored museum. Visitors can expect an engaging connection of art observation, institutional history, and aesthetic experience. Anyone who wants to understand how a collection grows and what significance art holds for a city community should definitely discover this exhibition live at the Art Museum Erlangen.
