in Motion: A Collection Tells Its Story

The Art Museum Erlangen opens its exhibition in Motion – The Collection of the Art Museum to showcase the creation, growth, and future of its own collection. Selected highlights reveal how civic engagement, curatorial work, and urban responsibility have shaped a regionally anchored art collection.

Collection History as a Living Memory

The exhibition traces back to 1989, when the Friends of the Art Museum Erlangen began to systematically accumulate works. Later, the ownership transitioned to municipal responsibility. This development connects institutional history with regional art history and demonstrates how closely collecting, preserving, researching, and disseminating are intertwined.

Painting, Graphics, and Regional Art in Dialogue

The focal point features selected highlights from the museum's collection. The art museum focuses on modern and contemporary art post-1945, as well as positions from Franconia, the Upper Palatinate, and the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region. Painting, graphics, sculpture, and other artistic expressions engage in a dialogue with questions of memory, cultural identity, and social responsibility.

Curating Between Retrospective and Future

The exhibition title describes a collection that does not appear as a completed archive. The curation makes visible how collections grow, what gaps emerge, and what future research fields open up. Thus, the exhibition serves both as an art-historical inventory and as an open working tool for the further development of the museum.

Aesthetic Experience in the Loewenich Palace

In the historic Loewenich Palace, baroque architecture meets modern art. Light, spatial effects, colors, and materials shape the exhibition atmosphere and draw attention to the peculiarities of the works. The concentrated viewing of the works connects sensory perception with expertise and cultural education, making the museum visit a sustainable art experience.

Art Museum as a Place of Exchange

The exhibition invites visitors to consider not only individual artworks but also the conditions of their collection. Tours and group offerings provide additional opportunities for in-depth engagement. Art history, curation, and the future of museum work become vividly tangible.
