In Motion: A Museum Tells Its Own Collection Story

With the exhibition In Motion – The Collection of the Art Museum, the Art Museum Erlangen focuses on the creation, development, and future of its own collection. On October 16, 2026, visitors will experience selected highlights from the collection and discover how closely artworks, civic engagement, and institutional responsibility are interconnected.

Collection as a Living Memory

The exhibition traces back to the year 1989 when the Friends of the Art Museum Erlangen began systematically gathering works. Later, the collection came under municipal responsibility. This development shapes the curation: The exhibition makes visible how a collection grows, what focuses emerge, and the role regional art from Franconia and the Upper Palatinate plays in museum work.

Between Retrospect and Future

The exhibition title describes not only the movement of a collection that has grown over decades. It also refers to a museum that continually reevaluates its holdings. Alongside historical retrospectives, gaps, expansion desires, and future research fields become apparent. Thus, the exhibition becomes both a working tool and an inspiring artistic experience.

Selected Highlights from the Collection

On display are selected highlights from the museum's collection. Various artistic positions offer insights into painting, sculpture, and contemporary art. Materiality, color, form, and spatial impact invite a concentrated viewing of the works. The exhibition atmosphere combines sensual experience with art historical context.

Cultural Education through Artwork Viewing

The exhibition is aimed at all those who not only want to view art but also understand its institutional and societal connections. It shows how curation, research, and cultural education interact. The museum does not appear as a closed storage but as a lively place of aesthetic experience and public engagement.

Conclusion

In Motion – The Collection of the Art Museum opens a knowledgeable and sensual view of the history of the Art Museum Erlangen. Visitors can expect an exhibition about artworks, collection policy, and the future of a cultural institution. Those who appreciate regional art, museum history, and contemporary curation should definitely experience this special artistic event live.
