In Motion: When a Collection Tells Its Story

The Art Museum Erlangen opens the view on the formation, development, and future of its own collection. The exhibition In Motion – The Collection of the Art Museum presents selected highlights and makes visible how regional art history, civic engagement, and museum curation have connected over decades.

Collection History as a Living Process

The tour leads back to 1989, when the Friends of the Art Museum Erlangen began systematically collecting works. With the later takeover by municipal responsibility, a collection emerged that preserves and re-examines artistic positions from Erlangen, the Nuremberg metropolitan region, Franconia, and the Upper Palatinate.

Painting, Sculpture, and Photography in Dialogue

Selected works direct the observation of the pieces towards materiality, form, colorfulness, and spatial impact. Painting, sculpture, and photography enter into a tension-filled dialogue, opening different access points to art after 1945. The exhibition atmosphere emerges from the interplay between concentrated individual observation and surprising relationships within the presentation.

Curation Between Retrospect and Future

The title of the exhibition not only describes the grown collection but also the museum as an open institution. The curatorial team consisting of Dr. Herbert Kurz, Sophia Petri, and Jannike Wiegand directs the focus on successes of the collection activity as well as on gaps, wishes for expansion, and future research fields. This makes the museum itself an object of aesthetic experience and cultural education.

Rediscovering Regional Art History

The exhibition connects personal encounters with works to fundamental questions: What is collected? Which artistic positions shape the image of a region? And how does the meaning of an artwork change when it appears in the context of other works? It is precisely this movement between past, present, and future that makes the visit an enlightening art experience.

Conclusion: A Museum in Dialogue with Its Time

In Motion – The Collection of the Art Museum welcomes visitors with selected collection highlights, regional art history, and a reflective presentation of museum work. Those who wish to not only view art but also trace its paths through history, institutions, and society will experience an inspiring observation of works and cultural enrichment at the Art Museum Erlangen.
