In Motion: A Collection Tells Its Story

The exhibition In Motion – The Collection of the Art Museum at the Art Museum Erlangen opens the view of the origin, development, and future of a regionally significant art collection. Selected highlights make visible how a museum can develop into a vibrant place of cultural education through civic engagement, curatorial work, and continuous expansion.

Regional Art History in the Loewenich Palace

The collection of the Art Museum Erlangen is based on the support association founded in 1989 and focuses on art from Erlangen, Franconia, the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region, and the Upper Palatinate. The emphasis is on art after 1945: painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, printmaking, and works on paper combine to create a diverse picture of regional art history.

Exploring Works Between Form, Color, and Material

The selected works invite a concentrated aesthetic experience. Color fields, lines, plastic forms, and different materials engage in a tense dialogue. Figurative, constructive, abstract, and informal positions showcase the stylistic diversity of the collection and continually open new perspectives on contemporary art.

Curating as a Look into the Future

The exhibition title not only describes the development of the collection but also the museum's self-understanding. Collecting, preserving, researching, and mediating appear as a dynamic process. The presentation questions which works shape regional art history and how a collection can reach future generations.

The Art Museum as a Place of Cultural Education

In the historic Loewenich Palace, exhibition, research, and mediation come together. The exhibition atmosphere allows for a relaxed tour where art historical contexts as well as personal impressions can be revealed. The art experience arises from the interplay of spatial effects, the contemplation of works, and the immediate encounter with originals.
