Adolf Schinnerer newly seen: A vernissage between landscape, line, and imagination

With the vernissage NEWLY SEEN – Adolf Schinnerer, the Erlangen City Museum opens an exhibition on one of the significant artists of the Erlangen region around 1900 on October 25, 2026. The presentation is dedicated to the painter, graphic artist, illustrator, and art writer Adolf Schinnerer, with a particular focus on his years in Tennenlohe.

An artist between nature observation and expression

Adolf Schinnerer lived and worked in Tennenlohe from 1904 to 1910. As a representative of Impressionism, he developed a distinct visual language that transforms landscapes not only into images but into color, rhythm, and atmosphere. He found his motifs in the Franconian nature, in the rural surroundings of Erlangen, and later in Ottershausen near Munich.

The exhibition shows a representative selection from his versatile oeuvre. Viewers can see paintings, graphics, and selected etchings, including numerous works from private family ownership as well as new acquisitions of the city museum. Many works will be presented in Erlangen for the first time.

Color, drypoint, and the poetic landscape

Schinnerer's painting impresses with a few, vividly applied colors and a concentrated perception of nature. In the exploration of his works, an art experience emerges that oscillates between quiet landscape poetry and expressive density. His particular mastery is also demonstrated in the drypoint technique, with which he captured landscapes and figures in striking lines.

His extraordinary series of etchings open a second level of aesthetic experience. Alongside precise observation, imagination, inner tension, and sometimes gloomy, disturbing image ideas emerge. The curation makes visible how closely Schinnerer's study of nature, graphic precision, and psychological intensity are interconnected.

Tennenlohe as an artistic experience space

A focus is on the Tennenlohe years. The exhibition thereby anchors Schinnerer's art in the cultural history of the region and invites visitors to perceive familiar landscapes with a new perspective. Together with the exhibition on Georg Greve-Lindau, this presentation forms the second part of a jubilee exhibition for the 150th birthday of both artists.

Schinnerer and Greve-Lindau studied at the Karlsruhe Academy of Art, were connected through the marriage of two sisters, and both received the prestigious Villa Romana Prize. These art historical connections give the exhibition additional depth.

Vernissage and accompanying program

The vernissage begins on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at 11 AM. Admission to the opening is free. The exhibition runs until February 14, 2027. Public tours, family tours, creative offerings, and workshops complement the presentation and combine art historical mediation with cultural education.

The city museum offers inclusive services such as a mobile FM system for hearing-impaired visitors. Accompaniment by sign language interpreters during tours is possible upon prior registration.

Conclusion: A new look at an unconventional artist

NEWLY SEEN – Adolf Schinnerer promises an impressive exhibition atmosphere between color-intensive painting, precise graphics, and mysterious etching art. Art enthusiasts experience how a regionally rooted artist transforms the landscape into a poetic and at the same time tension-filled image occurrence. The vernissage at the Erlangen City Museum provides the ideal start for an aesthetic experience that resonates long afterward.
