How Printed Semiconductors are Changing Our Everyday Lives
On Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg will open its doors as part of the FAU Innovation Days to showcase a technology with great future potential: printed semiconductors. At the IZNF research building, visitors will experience how research from the lab finds its way into computers, smartphones, solar cells, and other everyday applications.
Hands-On Research at IZNF
Semiconductors are among the invisible key technologies of the present. In the Collaborative Research Center ChemPrint – Printed Semiconductors of the next generation, FAU investigates how to produce these materials more accurately and efficiently. A central role is played by molecular surface chemistry, which allows the precise arrangement of the smallest building blocks on surfaces.
The event combines scientific lectures with insights into doctoral projects, a poster presentation, and an exhibition on industrial applications and robotics. This creates a diverse event atmosphere between research, exchange, and practical visions of the future.
Lectures, Doctoral Projects and Poster Presentation
The lecture program starts at 9:00 AM. Prof. Dr. Julien Bachmann, Ph.D., kicks off the day with a lecture titled From the Lab to Our Everyday Lives – Development of a New Generation of Semiconductors Using Innovative Printing Processes. This will be followed by contributions on AI-supported material modeling, the recycling of solar cells, and the scaling of fully printed perovskite photovoltaics.
From 11:00 AM, researchers will provide insights into innovative doctoral projects. Topics include the journey from the lab to industrial production, the creation of semiconductor materials, and electrochemical deposition processes. The poster presentation offers the opportunity to directly learn about research ideas and engage in discussions with the participants.
From Basic Research to Application
Particularly exciting is the transfer concept: FAU demonstrates how scientific findings are translated into market-ready applications. Start-ups like Automatic Research and ATLANT 3D Nanosystems exemplify the connection between research work, innovation, and industrial practice.
The event is aimed at students, researchers, university staff, alumni, and interested individuals from business and society. The program will be held in German and English. Throughout the event, the exhibition and information booth will invite further discoveries related to industrial applications and robotics.
Conclusion: Experience Future Technology in the Heart of Erlangen
The event experience at IZNF combines accessible science communication with current research topics and concrete application perspectives. Those who want to know how printed semiconductors, sustainable solar cells, and new production processes shape everyday life will experience an informative and stimulating research day here. Admission is free, and registration is recommended.
