Kwela! Kwela! – When children turn the church into a musical stage

An afternoon full of music, movement, and joy of play awaits children from six years old, teenagers, and anyone who wants to experience the stage. In the workshop at St. Peter and Paul Church in Erlangen, a lively pop-up performance emerges from an African musical story – with roles, costumes, props, and a lot of shared energy.

From the first rehearsal to the stage moment

Starting at 1:00 PM, intensive, yet playful theater work begins in the community hall. Texts will be learned, roles assigned, costumes put on, and musical instruments prepared. Over around two and a half hours, acting, music, and movement combine to create a shared performance. The participants actively shape the stage experience and experience dramaturgy not from a distance, but immediately in their own play.

An African story amidst dust, heat, and hope

The plot leads to a landscape where rain has been absent for many moons. Red dust and sweltering heat dictate the life of the animals. Following the advice of the Great Oracle, they dig together for a waterhole. Only Tschipo, the bush hare, initially prefers to play on his flute. When water is finally found, salvation seems near – but then the ghosts of the night appear.

Music, movement, and theater atmosphere

Kwela! Kwela! thrives on the interplay of rhythm, voice, and physical expression. The musical invites singing, dancing, and clapping. The church transforms into a special stage space: Acoustics, lighting mood, and the concentrated atmosphere of the sacred place give the performance its own character. The audience experiences up close how a small theater world is created step by step from a rehearsal.

The performance in the church

At 4:30 PM, the young participants present the approximately 35-minute musical in the church. Admission starts at 4:15 PM. The production is aimed at families and all interested parties who want to experience an immediate, communal form of stage art. The focus is on the joy of play, musical discovery, and the trust to bring something to the stage together.

Conclusion: An unusual stage experience for the whole family

Kwela! Kwela! combines workshop, theater rehearsal, and performance into a single grand stage experience. Children and teenagers become performers, musicians, and co-creators of a colorful musical world. Anyone who wants to experience theater atmosphere up close and see how a performance grows from movement, sound, and imagination will find a special afternoon in Erlangen.
