When Gold Becomes a Curse: Midas – the Musical at kubic Erlangen
A king reaches for fame, wealth, and power – thereby opening the door to a world where every wish has its price. On Friday, October 23, 2026, the Studiobühne Erlangen presents Midas – the Musical, a modern interpretation of the ancient myth on the stage of kubic.
The Ancient Myth as Contemporary Stage Art
King Midas has only one goal: He wants to expand his influence without limits. When the opportunity arises for him to strike a deal with the god of wine, a golden era begins – at least at first. The production delves into the dramatic core of the myth: What happens when possession loses all measure and power obscures the view of what is essential?
The text by Phijelle Damaschke combines the archaic weight of the legend with a modern theatrical handwriting. The dramaturgy develops a story from the material about greed, seduction, and the longing for recognition. Between divine promise and human overload, a tension arc is created that extends the myth directly into the present.
Newly Composed Music, Dance, and an Energetic Ensemble
The Studiobühne presents a world premiere with entirely newly composed music by Matthias Lange. A live band accompanies the stage action and gives the musical its own acoustic color. Singing, acting, and dance intertwine as the ensemble vividly portrays the rise and inner turmoil of the king with great joy in performance.
On stage are Alicia Barth, Nina Bundels, Klaus Harfmann, Aurelia Hutner, Nadja Pitter, Johanna Schmidt, Jaap Swaminathan, Marie Wagner, Viktoria Waldherr, and Jakob Wichert. The direction by Jolanda Petersen and Michael Rothbächer emphasizes a interplay of musical precision, emotional density, and scenic movement.
Golden Images and the Shadows of Power
The stage design by Lea Dannhäußer, Annkathrin Goeckel, Robert Gluch, and Andreas Satzinger creates the visual space for Midas' transformation. The costumes by Annkathrin Goeckel, Nadja Pitter, and Susanne Steinhauer underscore the transition between royal splendor, intoxicating promise, and the dark sides of desire.
In the Great Hall of kubic, this visual language meets acoustics designed for music and language. The rising audience area brings the spectators close to the characters and lets the theatrical atmosphere work immediately. Light, sound, and movement shape a stage experience that does not view the myth in a museum-like way, but makes it experienceable as a living trial of human excess.
A Theater Evening Between Myth and Present
Midas – the Musical connects ancient narrative history with an independent contemporary staging. The production by the Studiobühne Erlangen promises musical theater with heart, dance, and a clear dramaturgical question: How much is a fulfilled wish worth when it displaces everything else?
The audience can expect an atmospheric evening with newly composed music, committed acting, and an ensemble that makes the king's golden dream shine and its consequences resonate. Anyone who wants to experience theater as an immediate encounter of myth, music, and human conflict should discover this world premiere live at kubic.
