Discover the Hidden World of Fungi
In the Botanical Garden of FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg, a fascinating chapter of natural history unfolds: The three-hour identification workshop Introduction to the World of Fungi invites you to explore the diversity of native fungi with a sharpened eye. Together with Diana Härpfer, we will discuss biological fundamentals, typical characteristics, and the ecological significance of these extraordinary organisms.
Experience Mycology Understandably and Practically
Fungi are neither plants nor animals, yet they play a central role in numerous ecosystems. They live in symbiosis with trees, decompose dead material, and contribute to making nutrients available in natural cycles. The workshop vividly imparts this specialized knowledge and combines scientific classification with concrete observation tips.
Recognizing Identification Features More Clearly
The focus will be on important characteristics of various fungal groups as well as the question of what to look for when identifying in the field. Participants will receive practical tips for their own observations and finds. This event is aimed at both nature-interested beginners and hobby botanists.
A Special Learning Place in the Botanical Garden
The winter hall and the surroundings of the Botanical Garden create a concentrated, nature-oriented event atmosphere. As an institution of Friedrich-Alexander University, the Botanical Garden connects research, teaching, education, and recreation. Therefore, the event experience combines professional depth with immediate nature experience and a calm, attentive audience atmosphere.
Organization and Important Notes
The workshop begins on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 9:30 AM and ends at 12:30 PM. Participation costs 12 euros. Registration with the Botanical Garden at bg-fuehrungen@fau.de is required. According to the organizer, the workshop is already fully booked.
Conclusion: Fungal Knowledge for the Next Nature Walk
Those who want to not only see fungi but better understand and classify them in the future will experience a solid introduction to mycology here. The workshop combines expertise, nature observation, and clear event planning into a focused morning in the Botanical Garden.
