NEWLY SEEN: Adolf Schinnerer at the City Museum of Erlangen

On the occasion of his 150th birthday, the City Museum of Erlangen dedicates a comprehensive special exhibition to the Franconian painter, graphic artist, illustrator, and art writer Adolf Schinnerer. From October 25, 2026, to February 14, 2027, the exhibition offers a new perspective on a significant artist from the Erlangen region.

Landscape, Line, and Regional Memory

At the center is a representative selection from Schinnerer's versatile oeuvre. More than a hundred paintings and graphic works, including numerous loans from private family collections and several new acquisitions by the museum, will be seen largely for the first time in Erlangen. A special focus is on the Tennenlohe years as well as views from Franconia and the rural surroundings of Erlangen.

Schinnerer's painting thrives on concentrated color and immediate observation of nature. His landscapes, garden images, portraits, and representations of humans in nature combine impressionistic perception with a distinctive, personal visual language. The exhibition atmosphere invites visitors to perceive familiar landscapes with a changed perspective.

The Expressive Power of the Drypoint

Adolf Schinnerer developed special mastery in drypoint engraving. With precise yet nervous lines, he created powerful representations of landscapes and figures. His etching cycles exhibit a distinctive imagination that reveals both poetic moments as well as dark and disturbing aspects.

In the analysis of his works, it becomes visible how Schinnerer condensed line, surface, and black-and-white contrasts into a tense graphic language. In addition to painting and graphic art, the exhibition broadens the view of his work as an illustrator and art writer.

Art Historical Classification and Cultural Education

Adolf Schinnerer studied art history in Munich and at the Karlsruhe Academy of Art. Together with Georg Greve-Lindau, the first part of the anniversary exhibition, he shares the education in Karlsruhe, the activity in Tennenlohe, and the award of the prestigious Villa Romana Prize. Both artists are categorized as representatives of an independent impressionism, without permanently subordinating themselves to a single art movement.

The exhibition not only makes an artist's biography visible but also conveys regional art history. It connects aesthetic experience with cultural education and shows how painting, drawing, etching, illustration, and art writing interconnect in a cohesive body of work.

Accompanying Program for the Exhibition

The City Museum of Erlangen enhances the exhibition with public guided tours, family tours, creative offerings, and workshops. A tour with creative impulses, holiday workshops, and offerings for children and adults open various access points to the art. Guided tours can be booked for groups and school classes. For registered tours, sign language interpretation and a mobile FM system for hearing-impaired visitors are also available.

Conclusion: A New Art Experience in Erlangen

NEWLY SEEN – Adolf Schinnerer offers a concentrated art experience between landscape painting, graphics, and imaginative etching. The exhibition combines regional anchoring with art-historical relevance and makes a versatile body of work sensually experienceable. Those who wish to discover the poetic power of Franconian landscapes, the precision of the drypoint, and the surprising depths of graphic imagination should visit this exhibition live at the City Museum of Erlangen.
